Jalmari Alho,together with his wife Saima, founded Alhon Huopatehdas in the village of Partala, near Jämsä, in 1927. The factory is still operating in the same place today.

The felt factory has been in the same family since it was founded and today the felt slippers are manufactured already in the fourth generation.

The long history can be felt in the courtyard where our factory outlet is located. In the same courtyard you will find the old brick factory buildings and warehouses built in the 1950s.

Our Story

Alhon Huopatehdas began operations in 1927. The factory has remained in the same family ever since, continuously producing felt slippers to this day.

The Alho family’s felt-making tradition started already in the early 1920s in Alhojärvi, Jämsä, in a small sauna workshop. In 1927 Jalmari and Saima Alho established an actual felt factory in Mäntyniemi, Partala village – where the factory still operates today. The company was originally named Saima Alho & Kumppanit, later also J. Alhon Huopaliike, but eventually became known as Alhon Huopatehdas.

Our felt factory is the oldest continuously operating felt factory in Finland, producing felt slippers made from sheep’s wool as its main product. Felt slippers and other felt products have been made here throughout the factory’s entire history. In 1955, our felt boots were awarded a gold medal in a quality competition at the Finnish Fair in Helsinki.

The brick factory buildings of Alho Felt Factory were among the first structures in Partala village built specifically for industrial use. They were constructed in the 1940s and still house production today. Our yard reflects its long history, with the old yellow storage buildings, the family home, the guesthouse, and our Factory Shop, built in 2009.

In May 2016 Johanna Alho – the fourth generation of the Alho family – took over the factory, ensuring that felt expertise continues into the future. With new winds blowing, the company received a refreshed logo that reflects both modernity and its long heritage.

The air-conditioned Factory Shop also includes a café where you can enjoy homemade treats – and during the summer, scooped ice cream is also available. In the same courtyard, you’ll find our historic brick factory buildings and the Courtyard Shop, where we sell second-quality products and various felt materials. In the summer, you can also visit our small Yard Flea Market next to the Courtyard Shop.
